Harewood School
Founded in 1862, Harewood School is one of Christchurch's oldest primary schools and is celebrating it's 150 year anniversary in 2012.
As part of it's anniversary celebrations the School Board contracted Goom Landscapes to provide a revised landscape design for the school's main entrance area to make the school a safer, more welcoming environment for students as well as to highlight an important local community feature. The Cenotaph, which is situated within the school entrance, was erected as a memorial to local men who fought and died in the First and Second World Wars.
Situated on the outskirts of Christchurch in a semi-rural environment, Harewood School caters for between 180 - 200 students from New Entrants to Year 6. The School has a strong connection with the local community and the School Board was able to raise funds for the project from various sources including school fairs and pub charities plus generous donations of time and materials from local suppliers in the area.
With an empathy to the surrounding environment in mind, design work for the project was completed in July 2010 utilising local stones in the feature walls of the entranceway.
Unfortunately the M7.1 earthquake that struck Christchurch in September 2010 damaged the original Cenotaph, but with a generous donation from Westpac Bank to repair the monument, construction on the entranceway was able to commence in April 2011.
Goom Landscapes built and managed the project throughout, with the official opening held on 30th September 2011, in time for the school's anniversary celebrations next year.
Harewood School places priority on developing positive relationships between home, school and students. The new entranceway provides a welcoming link and focal point for students and the community as they make that daily transition.
