Ohoka Residence
Residents of Ohoka, just north of Christchurch, typically enjoy a semi-rural lifestyle on small holdings or 'lifestyle blocks' where children, family pets, swimming pools, large gardens and small horticultural enterprises are the norm.
Susan and David formerly lived in Singapore - one of the most densely populated cities on earth - but have recently refurbished their Ohoka house and embraced the lifestyle opportunities it offers.
Landscape Architect Craig Wilson designed Susan and David's outdoor room and landscape features, while Planting Manager Darryl White was responsible for all planting throughout the project.
Shelter from North Canterbury's buffeting nor'westers and chilly easterly winds was the priority with a swimming pool, courtyard and conservatory also on the wish list. The rectangular pool is large yet simple in design, enclosed by sections of stone-faced and solid-plastered blocks with raised planters. There's a long 'window' of glass fencing for unobstructed visibility between the pool and house. Palms add grace to the poolside enclosure which has its own seating area.
Feature walls at the entrance are covered with local Waimakariri River stone. There are roses, box hedging and a perfect lawn with specimen trees. This is a functional, much-loved garden for family to relax in, entertain and enjoy.
There can be no doubt this is a worthy winner of the Outdoor Living Award at the 2010 Master Builders House of the Year Awards.
