Project Overview

This project is a continuation of the long standing relationship Goom Landscapes has with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Redwood Fire Station is one of over 15 fire stations Goom Landscapes have been involved with throughout the North and South Islands.

For Redwood Station we worked through the initial consent process making our first site visit when it was still a rural residential property in November of 2016, through to the opening ceremony in June of 2019.

Key items of the design include the following:

  • Clean open working spaces (large concrete yard space)
We elevated these areas through the use of intentionally placed saw cuts aligned with the building rather than a simple grid. We also used different tones of exposed aggregate in the areas of the road front landscape where they would have more visual impact to the public eye.
  • Private courtyard area leading off from the main kitchen
Similar to the concrete areas we aligned cuts in the decking layout with the door joinery for an indoor-outdoor connection, that extended vertically to create the timber panels that enclosed the courtyard. Double shade sails were added for flexibility of shade through the seasons.
  • Welcoming and appealing street front presence
Bright native planting was used to hold strong against the red of the building. Precast panel walls had diagonal inlays inserted in them to relate to the existing design used in the Styx Mill Reserve located a few hundred meters up the road.
