Project Overview

This project was an earthquake rebuild. The site is located on the banks of the Avon River with the original home suffering major damage during the Christchurch Earthquake of 2011. Goom Landscapes had designed and constructed the pre-earthquake landscape and were the client’s first choice for the rebuild. The new house was a much more modern space, however as with the previous lines and surfaces were to be very crisp and clean.

Everything bar the sunken courtyard and jetty on the river’s edge and boundary walls was removed from site. Some peripheral planting was retained whilst other plants including the conifers along the driveway and tree ferns were removed, maintained in the Goom nursery throughout the build, and then replanted in the final design over a year later.

Key items of the brief include the following:

  • Maintain openness through to the river’s edge and views to the Mona Vale walkway opposite
  • Clean, strong lines (clearly delineated soft vs hard)
  • Retain existing planting where possible
  • Dog proof fencing
  • Work within consent requirements (higher floor level than previous house necessitating more steps throughout)
  • Work alongside the builder on a tight narrow site
